Christ the Builder - History

  Brief History
In October of 1968 the Catholics of Mississippi, under the direction of Bishop Joseph B. Brunini, D.D., opened a mission in the Northern Mexico city of Saltillo. Father Patrick Quinn, the first pastor of the mission, began his work there in January of 1969.

Christ the BuilderSince 1970 tens of thousands of youth and adults have made the journey to Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Perpetuo Soccorro) Parish in Saltillo.

In 1999 a new Mission compound was completed San Miguel Mission. Sleeping accommodations and meals are provided at the Mission. It houses a large dining area, kitchen, meeting room, chapel, upstairs veranda and a covered gazebo in the courtyard.

Father Bill Cullen and the San Miguel Mission, in association with Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, are responsible for three churches in Saltillo, as well as the spiritual needs of those in the Parish, in the Barrios and in the 37 Ranchos it serves in the outlying areas. Some of these Ranchos are as far out as a 3-4 hour drive (often with much of the trip on dirt roads). Those Barrios and Ranchos which the Mission serves are truly the poorest of the poor.

  Mission Statement
Christ the Builder is a community of all faiths who desire to serve the poor and needy in Central America and Mexico, through the building of dwellings, other structures and relationships, under the guidance of Jesus Christ our Lord and the direction of the Catholic Church. Calling upon the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the protection of the Blessed Mother, we strive to provide those with abundant blessings an opportunity to share their abundance and God's love with the poor and needy of this region.

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. - Psalm 127: 1

  The Mission Experience

Christ the BuilderThe Saltillo Mission experience is one that calls for each participant to immerse himself into the lives of those whom he is serving. The foundation of this experience is prayer and service.

Sacrifice is necessary as we enter into the lives, culture and experience of our brothers and sisters in Mexico. As Missionaries it is good to have some form of reflection experience. Each participant may need to process what they see, feel and experience while here. Mass, reflection and prayer are an integral part of the experience.
